Should You AVOID Oblique Exercises?
January 8, 2025Should you even bother training your obliques? Some people will try to argue that doing oblique exercises is not a good idea if you want to have a thinner waist. However, if you have low enough levels of body fat and you train them the right way, your obliques are going to add to the tapering effect of lean, muscular physique.
The right way to train the obliques is not the same way that you would train your abs, however. Instead of movements that are forward and back in the sagittal plane, you will want to add rotational exercises to your routine.
The fact that the muscle fibers of the obliques run diagonally shows that you need to rotate your torso to effectively hit them. Add in some weighted exercises for extra overload in the form of weights, bands, or even your own legs when hanging from a pullup bar.
Training your obliques is necessary for an overall aesthetic physique, especially at low body fat levels, and it requires you to train them effectively.
